Ginny, Sam and Brutus in Sarasota, Fla.
Sam did not return to the bank after the war. When he was discharged from the US Army in 1946, he attended Boston University using the GI Bill and earned his bachelor's degree in business administration. In 1947 he met Ginny Whasal of Brockton, Mass., who was working in B.U.'s journalism department.
Sam and Ginny married in 1948. He went to work for Aetna Life and Casualty and spent his thirty-five year career in sales, working in Cleveland, Ohio; the West Bloomfield suburb of Detroit, Mich.; and West Hartford, Conn.
They had two sons, Stephan and Geoff. Steve Keyes graduated from Denison University in 1972 and has worked in the financial services market for more than forty years. Steve married Rhanda Dover on July 2, 1982. They have a daughter, Katharine Elizabeth Keyes, born April 17, 1985. They currently reside on Lake Lanier outside Atlanta, Georgia. Geoff Keyes graduated from Ashland College in 1975 and has owned a Cape Coral, Florida, construction company since 1994.
In 1986 Sam and Ginny retired to Longboat Key, Florida, where they were active in the community, sailed their Krogen 38 Cutter, Trilogy, and later cruised aboard a Grand Banks 36 and a Hatteras 42, both power yachts also named Trilogy, with their numerous friends from the Bird Key Yacht Club. They always got along well, even on a boat! Sam and Ginny were married 62 years. Ginny passed away from cancer in 2010. Sam moved to Cape Coral, Florida, in 2011. He passed away July 4, 2012.
